Thallus shrubby, erect, usually fasciculate, to 5 cm tall, pale yellow to yellow-green; branching sparsely dichotomous or subdichotomous; trunk black at base; branches terete, 0.5–1.0 mm wide; apices tapered or blunt, often blackened; branchlets and fibrils absent to moderately numerous; papillae rare. Isidia numerous in pseudocyphellae, dense, often eroded, short, sometimes black-tipped; pseudocyphellae discrete, often arranged in bands towards apices, numerous towards apices, medium-sized and punctiform or large and ±globose; soralia absent. Cortex smooth, waxy. Medulla inconspicuous, narrow, moderately dense; axis 1/2–2/3 width of branch, hyaline. Apothecia rare, lateral, c. 3 mm diam.; disc concave, with few fibrils on margin; lower surface smooth. Ascospores c.11 × 8 µm. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K–, containing squamatic acid (major) and ±consquamatic acid (trace), or psoromic acid (major), ±conpsoromic acid (minor) and ±2’-O-demethylpsoromic acid (trace), or (rarely) squamatic acid and diffractaic acid, or (rarely) psoromic acid and diffractaic acid, or lacking lichen substances.
Occurs on granite in subalpine, southern N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic., with a single collection from north-eastern N.S.W.; on rock or shrubs on mountains in Tas. Also in New Zealand.
